The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery featured artists for the month of September are photographer G. Brad Lewis and wood turners Parker and Debbie Nicholson.
Lewis is internationally recognized as a leading volcano and nature photographer. His volcano images have appeared on the covers of a number of magazines including Life, Natural History, Photographer’s Forum and Geo, and within the pages of Time, Outside, Fortune, Newsweek, Stern, National Geographic and many others. Lewis has received numerous awards for his work and interviews with him have been broadcast on the NBC “Today Show,” CBS “Evening News” and Discovery Channel. Lewis moved to the Volcano area in 1982 with his family. He is also based in Utah and Alaska. Lewis’ goal with his photography is “to connect the viewer to a deep appreciation of the natural world. I utilize the movement, light and texture of volcanic activity to open human emotions to the pulse of the planet.”
Parker and Debbie Nicholson are a team of wood workers who live and work in Keaau. All their wood creations are made with wood found in Hawaii, including koa, milo, kamani, mango, mulang and sugi pine. Parker has been turning bowls, building furniture and restoring houses for more than 35 years while Debbie has been a wood turner since 2002. Parker’s passion with wood has led him to creating larger pieces: limb junction, oval bowls, platters and natural edged vessels while Debbie is drawn to smaller bowls, colorfully dyed bowls and creating waterproof bud vases and jewelry. Prior to moving to Hawaii, the team participated in juried art festivals in the Midwest. They show their work in several galleries around the Big Island. The Blue Sea Artisans Gallery is located at the Kona International Market off Luhia Street in Kailua-Kona. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
